Kattalai Shivan

About:

Kattalai Shiva Temple, Kumarapuram, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu – 629189

The Temple is situated in the area of Perumchilampu, in Velimalai village, Kalkulam taluka in Kanyakumari district of South Tamil Nadu. It is situated near the historic Padmanabhapuram town and Nagercoil city, the administrative headquarters of the area.

History
The exact origins of the temple are unknown, it is believed that during the Dwapara era, in the Mahabharata war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, the Pandavas had to win the war for Dharma to be established.   With the blessings of Almighty Lord Krishna, the Pandavas – according to the advice of Almighty Lord Krishna to win the War, the ever powerful Pasupathaasthram had to be achieved from Almighty Lord Shiva.  After their banishment to the forests of the Pandavas, deep in the forests, at the foothills of Velimalai in the Kingdom of Kattalai – One of the Pandavas, Arjunan did penance under rigorous circumstances to have the Pasupathaasthram from Almighty Lord Shiva.  Almighty Lord Shiva, is the one who tests the disciples to the maximum extent for the utmost blessings is my Almighty Lord Shiva.  Once convinced with the penance of Arjunan, the Almighty couple, Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva appeared as Kattalan and Kattalathi presented the Pasupathaasthram to Arjunan.  Such blessed is the holy place of Kattalai.

The idol at this temple is the direct descent of the lord that happened then as Kattalan.  The Almighty here blesses all his disciples in the disguise that he appeared to Arjunan to guide them on the lines of peace and prosperity.
